ger door

In January 2004, I stayed with nomadic herders in their ger (circular felt tent) in a semi-desert region 300 kms south-west of Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar.

Despite it being the middle of winter, with temperatures plummeting down to minus 30 at night, I found the strangest thing was seeing snow on sand.

As I took this shot, looking out the door at dawn, I was careful not to stand on the bottom of the doorframe – Mongolians believe that it is an insult to the spirits who reside there.
