Ulaangom after rain

I took this photo in Ulaangom in north-western Mongolia in August 2003 just after an afternoon thunderstorm.

Newly arrived in the small town after a two month horse-trek from central Mongolia, I was still quite dazed by the number of people and vehicles going about their lives amongst the bleak, towering apartment blocks.

It was a far cry from the endless rolling steppes, rugged mountain passes and flooded rivers I had recently been travelling through.

The town’s name means ‘red sand’.
